Giving stock as a donation may greatly benefit you as a philanthropist, as well as The WakeMed Foundation. We accept securities traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange or the NASDAQ National Market as outright gifts, payments towards pledges, or to fund certain deferred gifts.
If your stock has increased in value from the time of purchase, you may avoid paying the capital gains tax by donating the security to another party. When the security is being donated to the WakeMed Foundation, the total amount will still be eligible for a tax deduction. Since taxation is avoided on the stock donation, you as the giver will be able to make a larger donation.
All publicly traded stock and mutual fund shares will be sold by the Foundation as soon as possible. Specific questions of how securities are transferred for donation purposes may be directed to the Foundation office at (919) 350-7656.
